painting fundamentals for beginners
Welcome!
This course is for the absolute beginner. While it may also be a helpful refresher for someone who is already on the path and painting, it is created with the true beginner in mind. So many courses—including my own signature course, Oil For Everyone—say that beginners are welcome, but a true beginner does not really believe it. I remember how that feels, and its like you just want something that is truly basic and step by step.
So while my oil painting course is extremely comprehensive and is meant to be beginner-friendly-ish, I wanted to create a smaller course that is truly tailored specifically to the complete beginner. Even if you have never picked up a brush before, I got you.
Here you will learn painting tools and basics, using watercolor and oil paint as examples. If you want to try oil painting but are intimidated to jump right in to Oil For Everyone, or maybe you believe too strongly that you “should” start with a different medium, like watercolor, then this is the class for you!
This course covers basics for both oil and watercolor paints, and I encourage you to choose one to begin with, and then go back through it a second time with the other. I promise you there is no rule book in the sky that says you can’t start with oils. If that is what you feel called to do, absolutely do oils first and watercolor second.
Why watercolor and oil? For one, those are what I use. And I use them because not only do I love working with them, I also love that they are natural substances that come directly from the earth (whereas acrylic paints are technically micro plastics). Acrylics can create beautiful art—I have tried them myself and I also know many acrylic artists whose work I love. However, for me, the energy of the material I use is very important. And I could never really enjoy using something that is technically plastic when I could be using something literally of the earth.
Beyond that, watercolor and oils are just two fantastic paint mediums to learn with! They are very different yet both are very simple (yes, even oil). And while simple, oils are not as versatile as watercolors when it comes to painting plein air (outdoors) or when traveling. So I wanted to combine them into one class to give you all the basics and tools for both, in one spot.
