Ferries are a portal to another world. When you get on a ferry, you know you are leaving any mainland troubles behind you as you head for the island. A ferry, to those who travel on them, is a symbol of summer, carefree days, and a slower pace. There is something about arriving on an island by an old fashioned slow ferry that just puts the traveler immediately into the vacation state of mind.

Ferries are an important symbol as they bring to mind the peace of an island, disconnecting from the hectic “real world” and immersing oneself in the slower pace of lazy summer days. Until recent times, many islands had limited connectivity with the outside world; today we have wifi and 5G, but the unique feeling of “leaving one’s cares behind” remains.

A ferry connects us to a slower, simpler time. It is a portal to another, simpler, world. In more than one mythologies, ferries and ferry captains have often played the role of portal, connecting us to different worlds or times.
